Soccer games are played with two teams. On each team, there are eleven players allowed on the soccer field during game play. The objective of the game is to score as many points as possible through the opposing team’s defenses by using a single round ball called “football”. In every soccer game, be it recreational or competitive, has one primary rule: the goalkeeper alone can hold or touch the soccer ball during game plays. Other players on the field are only allowed to hold the soccer ball during “throw in” restart. The other players on the field may use any part of their bodies except their hands during game plays.
In most soccer games, the players will attempt to score through the opposing teams’ goal by passing the soccer ball from one teammate to another or by taking shots at the goal, which is being guarded by the opposing team’s goalkeeper. At the same time the opposing team will try to take control of the soccer ball by means of interception of a pass or by tackling the opposing team’s player who has control of the ball. However, any harsh physical contact towards another player is not allowed.
Similar to other team sports, soccer games have a number of player specializations. The Laws of the Game, a set of rules that is used on almost all soccer game tournaments and competitions, do specify player positions. The player specialization on the position of soccer players on the field are classified into three main categories. These are the strikers, defenders and midfielders. Strikers or forwards are players on the fields whose main objective is to score points or goals. Defenders are the ones who specialize in preventing the opposing team from scoring on their goal. While midfielders are the ones whose main duties are to repossess the ball from the opposing team and keep possession of the ball and pass it to their forwards or strikers.
