Mastering The Potential Of Diablo 3’s Magic Find And Gold Find

Mastering The Potential Of Diablo 3’s Magic Find And Gold Find

One of your main priorities while playing Diablo 3 will be to get the best loot drops and the most gold. There are two particular stats in Diablo 3, Magic Find and Gold Find, which will help you a lot in that regard. Continue reading to learn about the importance of Magic Find and Gold Find and how to use them properly and effectively.

There are several ways to acquire Magic Find (MF) and Gold Find (GF) in Diablo 3.

Both can be stats on your gear and also permanently acquired from Paragon levels. In addition, you get a bonus MF/GF increase from getting the NV (Nephalem Valor) stack buff. As of patch 1.04, the base MF or GF is capped at 300. The NV buff from killing Elites will add an extra 15% per stack, giving you 75% once you have all 5 Nephalem Valor. This brings the total possible MF and GF to 375%.

Blizzard’s official explanation of Magic Find is as follows:

“Magic Find affects the quality of items you acquire from killing enemies (but not treasure chests, vases, weapon racks, or other environmental objects). It doesn’t give you a chance to get more items on a given kill – instead, it increases the chance that an item you find will be magical, and more potent than it would be otherwise.”

When a monster drops an item, the quality of the item is determined from a chart that includes the item’s quality and the number of affixes present. The game randomly “rolls” on each property in the chart to determine which affixes your item will get. Your MF score is applied as a bonus to these rolls.

In other words… the higher your MF, the better the chances are of getting high quality gear.

For farming and making sure to get the best items, it should be your first priority to get all 5 NV stacks. Blizzard guarantees one rare per Elite pack if you have 4 NV and 2 rare drops per pack if you have all 5. Your MF values are then added to your stats from your Nephalem Valor, increasing the likelihood of getting better, higher level items.

Is More Magic Find and Gold Find Always Better?

If you gear yourself with lots of MF for farming in Diablo 3, you need to know that MF and GF gear generally has weaker stats such as lower defense and lower damage. It will always be a compromise between getting more and better loot and being able to output maximum damage plus high armor and resists. Gear which has Magic Find on it but also good normal stats can be extremely expensive. If you over do it with MF/GF and die too often, it would make sense to choose less MF/GF, or else it won’t be worth your time.

There is anecdotal reports amongst some Diablo 3 players claiming that “too much” Magic Find or Gold Find is actually worse for getting good loot as opposed to having it at, say, a moderate value such as 200 before NV. But those reports cannot be confirmed and should be taken with a grain of salt. As a general rule, get as much Magic Find and Gold Find as you can get without making any big compromises. The new Paragon level system as of patch 1.04 is a great way to acquire permanent MF and GF, ultimately eliminating the requirement for special Magic Find or Gold Find gear.

It’s clear that Diablo 3 is all about loot and getting the best gear and it’s indisputable that MF and GF will get you there quicker than any alternative. With some time spent in-game, you’ll soon have such powerful gear that your foes will be hiding behind trees to avoid you.
